How many cracks can I monitor with the ElliTrak?
The logger has two channels, which allows measurement of up to two cracks.
What is the maximum crack width that can be measured?
The piston is designed to measure a range of 0 to 25 mm, with a mechanical range of approximately 29 mm. Therefore, the crack movement must remain within this range.
The mounting points have a wider point to point dimension. The two fixing holes are positioned approximately 150 mm apart. Installation is normally carried out by drilling two 8 mm diameter holes, approximately 40 mm deep, and using metal anchor bolts, plugs and nuts to secure the sensor.
What type of anchor fixings should be used?
Metal anchor bolts and plugs should be used. This helps ensure that expansion or contraction of the fixing does not influence the measured data.
How far off the wall does the sensor sit, and must the sensor be fixed directly to the wall?
The sensor should not be fixed directly flat against the wall, as the piston must remain free to move.
There are two supplied nuts on each bolt, allowing the engineer to position the piston a few millimetres away from the wall. This prevents the piston from touching the wall as the crack moves.
What is the cable length of the piston, and how far can it be positioned from the logger?
The maximum cable length from the piston to the logger is up to 1 metre.
If two sensors are installed on one logger, the maximum distance between measurement points could be approximately 2 metres, provided the logger is positioned centrally.
Can the crack monitor be used outdoors?
Yes. The ElliTrak crack monitor is designed for both indoor and outdoor use and has an IP67 rating. The operating temperature range is approximately minus 50 °C to 120 °C.
How long is the battery life of the crack monitor?
Battery life depends largely on the monitor settings, upload frequency and signal strength.

The lithium battery can provide a long battery life of up to 3 years when using daily uploads with good signal. However, where signal is poor, or where the upload period is increased, the number of possible connections is reduced.
The maximum number of connections is approximately 1,500 transmissions. This should be used to estimate the likely battery life. Transmission connections are counted on the cloud platform, so the remaining battery period can be estimated.
What type of sensor is used?
The logger uses two channels and can be connected to one or two potentiometer sensors.
What are the weight and dimensions of the equipment?

Do I need to consider signal strength, and where is the logger best located?
Yes, signal strength should be considered during installation.
The logger should be mounted as close to the outdoor environment as possible. Signal strength may be reduced in basements, underground areas, deep voids, or within metal lined buildings.
The sensor should always be mounted at the crack, while the logger should be positioned in as open a location as possible to obtain the best signal. Ideally, the logger should be positioned outside, or near a window.
This does not mean that the sensor cannot be used in a basement, but the installation should be assessed properly to ensure that sufficient signal strength can be achieved for remote connection and to maximise battery life.
The crack monitor logger is using more battery than expected. Why is this?
This is usually due to signal strength or the configured upload frequency.
Poor signal can increase battery consumption because the logger uses more power when attempting to connect and transmit data. More frequent transmissions will also reduce battery life.
What type of material can the crack monitor be installed on?
The crack monitor is suitable for mounting on materials such as brickwork, blockwork and concrete.
It can be used for construction, demolition, bridges, viaducts and similar structural monitoring applications.
Can the crack monitor be fixed without drilling holes in the wall?
Yes, but this would need to be done using a high strength tensile adhesive with a suitable PSI rating, so that the fixing remains rigid.
A metal plate with a threaded fixing point should be manufactured for this type of installation. This is not supplied by us.
Care should be taken when using any alternative fixing method, as some materials may influence the readings due to expansion or contraction caused by temperature or humidity.
