Frequently Asked Question's

Will this monitor help me meet section 61 requirements for dust monitoring?

The Aeroqual Dust Sentry is a highly capable tool for meeting Section 61 (Control of Pollution Act 1974) requirements.

Is the Dust Sentry an MCERTS-certified monitor for PM10 and PM2.5?

The Dust Sentry is part of the Aeroqual AQS range, which includes a nephelometer. Early versions of the monitor were only MCERTS certified for PM10 and could measure fractions TSP, PM10, PM2.5 or PM1. The term ‘or’ means the sensor is capable of measuring all four particle sizes, but only one particle fraction at any one time.

The Dust Sentry was recently recertified and upgraded with the latest sensor technology. When installed with the PMX module, the unit can measure both PM10 and PM2.5 and is MCERTS certified.

What is the electrical current draw on a Dust Sentry, and can it be battery or solar powered?

Yes, the Dust Sentry can be powered by a PowerHub CA-5535 battery from Campbell Associates or a Solar PowerHub CA-5546. The current draw is 30 watts. A battery will typically provide around one week of power with a 200 Ah rated battery, and continuous power with a Solar PowerHub.

The solar power hub should be supplied with backup batteries to provide power through the night and during periods of low light. During winter, sunlight hours can be limited to around one hour per day, which may not provide sufficient power for continuous operation. In these cases, additional recharging using a portable battery cart or increasing the panel size is recommended.

What is the expected power duration on a PowerHub 200 Ah battery?

The battery will typically provide around one week of power to the unit.

Will I be alerted if the unit runs out of power?

Yes. When connected through a Sonitus Cloud project, the system monitors voltage and connectivity. You can enable connectivity alerts to notify you daily or during office hours, prompting you to recharge the battery when an alert is received.

Are Dust Sentry monitors reliable and accurate?

Yes. Dust Sentry monitors are built within solar and dust-protected enclosures specifically designed for harsh environments. In contrast, lower cost sensors do not provide the same level of robustness and accuracy.

Over longer monitoring periods, high quality monitors are more worthwhile. Robust sensors offer greater reliability, which in turn reduces complaints, downtime, and unnecessary site visits.

How often will the Dust Sentry provide data to the cloud?

The Dust Sentry provides a continuous stream of real time data, enabling quick response to elevated dust levels. This allows site managers to react promptly to uncontrolled events and maintain effective dust control.

Can a weather station be connected to a Dust Sentry?

Yes. Working with our partners, we can supply Gill sonic wind speed and direction sensors to help establish the source of dust based on prevailing winds. These sensors are robust and provide reliable measurements up to 75 m/s or 168 mph.

Additional sensors are also available for precipitation, pressure, and humidity.

Can the Dust Sentry be used for construction monitoring projects?

Yes. In the UK, the Dust Sentry is commonly used for construction monitoring due to its reliability and credibility. The monitor is referenced in various industry articles and dust management guides as a suitable solution for site monitoring.

A key reason for its effectiveness is its sensor and heater technology. On construction sites, water suppression is often used to control dust, which can cause standard sensors to incorrectly measure water droplets as dust particles.

The Dust Sentry addresses this by using a heated inlet, which reduces humidity by drying the air, and a cyclone to filter out larger particles, improving measurement accuracy.

Can I measure gases with the Dust Sentry?

No. The Dust Sentry only measures dust and particulate matter.

However, the AQS Air Quality Station can be configured to measure both gases and particulate matter simultaneously.

Can I rent or hire the Dust Sentry to see how useful it is for my project?

Yes. Campbell Associates is the UK’s leading supplier of Aeroqual products. We have hundreds of Dust Sentry units available for hire, typically with next day delivery. All units are compliant, certified, calibrated, and ready to use.

Simply supply power, and the unit will operate straight out of the box.
